SAFE builds new future for old drive-in

The first eight units of the Starland Heights development will be completed April 2, with families expected to start moving in at the first of May.

The Starland project has been attracting attention almost since Aug. 17, 2000, when it got under way. "We have people come up here every day," Proffitt said. "It's like a tourist attraction." Yates said she has already had 55 contacts for the first eight units and 20 families have already filled out applications. The units are $300 per month, HUD approved and are eligible for Section 8 vouchers.

The construction team all had fond memories of the site when it was a drive in theater. "We used to stop off at Mac's in Keystone on the way to the drive-in," Parish said. "You could get seven hot dogs there for $1."

"There was a little train that went around the entire place here," Yates said. "There was a merry-go-round in the middle. People came here before it got dark to have fun before the movie started." The theater was active until 1985.

"I hadn't really thought about how beautiful it was up here until we took the old screen down," Yates said, pointing to the tree-covered mountains to the Southwest. "We had a visitor here in the fall who looked out and remarked how beautiful the view was. It really is beautiful."
