Mule-Horse-drawn trolleys operated from 1881 to 1904. They were replaced by electric trolleys, which ran from 1904 to 1927. A 1907 map shows the trolley route as winding its way around First, Second, Third, Coal, Gold and Railroad (later Central) Avenue, making frequent turns, and eventually leading to 12th and Sawmill and a park called Traction Park on Rio Grande Blvd. Traction Park no longer exists. Later the trolley ran east on Central. The reason that Monte Vista Boulevard is so wide, the story goes, is that there had been plans to have the trolley proceed northeast from Girard. That never happened.
