Alcyon Park, Pitman, NJ ,1890's - 1944

Alcyon Amusement Park was a large park located alongside Alcyon Lake in Pitman, NJ. The lake was popular for bathing and fishing. Built in the 1890's, the park first consisted of a boardwalk, a bath house, bowling alleys, a tobaggan ride, a merry-go-round, a roller rink, and a half-mile dirt racetrack. A theater and restaurant were added in the early 1900's. In 1910 a speedway was added. At it's peak, crowds from 10,000 to 35,000 would visit the park in a single day. During WW II, attendance dwindled and in 1944, the amusement park closed. Most of the buildings were demolished. The speedway continued to operate for many years after the park. But in 1960, the speedway was also closed.

UPDATE - June, 2000 -- Alcyon Park - An apartment complex has been built on the front part of what used to be the park, but most of the site of the Alcyon Amusement Park has been transformed into a beautiful civic park.

The new Alcyon Park contains ballfields, picnic pavilions, and walking paths. It has beautiful greenery and a waterfront along Alcyon Lake. There are no remnants of the amusement park left.
