Welcome to the Route Through The Woods

The Tall Pines Scenic Railroad is located in Berwick, Maine on an old tree farm. The land is heavily wooded with a mixture of Red and White Pines, Hemlock, Fir, Maple, Oak, and Birch trees.

Presently, there is 1423' of 15" guage track made up from 12 lb rail lag bolted to 4 x 4 x 30" pressure treated ties. Heavy duty landscape fabric was first put down to prevent ballast from sinking into the ground and to prevent weed growth. Finally 3/4" stone ballast was used to level the track.

When the line is finished, there will be over a mile of track. This includes 3359' of main line and the rest sidings and yard area.

Tall Pines Scenic Railroad currently has a 3" scale GE 50 ton 0-4-0 switcher. The prime mover is a Kohler 16 hp gas engine driving a hydraulic pump which in turn drives two hydraulic motors, one on each axle. The engine has an air system for train brakes, air horns, and operating headlights. Weight - 1200 lbs, Wheel diameter - 8 5/8", Fuel - gasoline, capacity 3.6 gal.

ROLLING STOCK

There are five freight cars on the railroad. These include a flat car, hopper, low side gondola, high side gondola, and box car. Under construction is a "backhoe" car. This is basically a flat car with a backhoe attached to the deck.

Projects this year included ballasting some 1200' of track, building a number 11 switch, adding 102'of track, and building a 48' long trestle. I also managed to get some roadbed grading done in preparation for the next section of track. Winter projects scheduled are finishing the backhoe car, three pair of trucks and building a caboose.

Although the line is private and not open to the general public, model railroad enthusiasts are welcome and should call ---------- or e-mail for an invitation and directions.
